<마지막으로 떠나는 사람이 불을 끈다 Viiemeinen Sammuttaa Valot>展
지난 한 세기 동안 핀란드 전역에선 여러 외딴 마을들이 전력망과 연결될 때 그걸 축하하는 조명 축제를 열곤 했다. 불과 몇 십 년 후, 바로 이 마을들의 인구가 소멸되고 동네가 버려지는 안타까운 상황을 일컬어 "마지막으로 떠나는 사람이 불을 끈다"라는 다소 우울한 속담이 생겼다.
이번 개인전 <비메이넨 삼뭇따 발롯/ 마지막으로 떠나는 사람이 불을 끈다>는 급격한 재개발과 건설 산업이 끊임없이 만들어내는 파괴 속의 거주 환경을 묘사한다. 특히 몇 십 킬로미터 면적의 동네가 단숨에 철거되어 산산조각 난 풍경, 지역 문화 및 역사의 갑작스러운 소실이 하나의 자연스러운 도시의 성장 요소가 된 사실을 마주하고, 그러한 도시를 하나의 구체적인 장소이자 상징으로서 표현한다.
이번 전시는 크게 네 가지의 작품들이 뒤섞여있는데, 발견된 오브제, 사진, 기성품, 조형의 설치로 이루어진다. 광란의 개발과 환경의 변모라는 문제를 정면으로 바라보면서 대항할 수 없는 우리의 모습을 인지하고, 파괴된 건물과 장소에서 발견된 매체들에서 느껴지는 무력함, 애석함, 향수를 담는 동시에, 생존의 심리적 필수 조건으로 '아름다움'을 찾아 헤메는 인간의 여정을 반영한다.
During the past century, across Finland festivals of light were organised when towns got connected to the electrical grid. When, only some decades later, these same remote towns began to be deserted the rather melancholic saying came about: Viimeinen sammuttaa valot.
The exhibition Viimeinen Sammuttaa Valot (Last One Out Shut Off The Lights) reflects a living environment caught in the midst of constant destruction brought about by rapid redevelopment and the building industry. It specifically explores the city as both a tangible place and a metaphor. While it portrays the shattered landscapes of entire neighbourhoods being demolished and the sudden erasure of local culture and history, it also recognises the inevitable destruction that has become an integral part of city's never-ending growth.
The exhibition encompasses four bodies of work, incorporating found objects from demolished houses, discarded frames, as well as an installation of photographs, ready-made products, and sculptures. These artworks confront the challenges posed by franzied development and environmental transformation while acknowledging our inability to counteract and our dependency on the comfort derived from this very process. The found materials from these environment evoke feelings of helplessness, nostalgia, and yearning, reflecting on humans' enduring quest for beauty as an essential psychological tool for survival.
